Fighting Colours
By 1918 most air units had abandoned any pretence at using camouflage colour schemes and a riot of individual bright personal decorative paint liveries had appeared. Perhaps initiated by the Red Baron circus squadrons who used their distinctive colours to taunt the RAF and French forces with their superiority in 1917. Most units flaunted their individual and squadron identity with bright assertive painting - as seen here in the clash between the American Hat in the Ring Nieuport and the distinctive Albatross DV.
